Minimalism with the hidden depth of the new Lake Whillans’ website
Lake Whillans is a law firm and a lake, hidden beneath hundreds of meters of Antarctic ice. Despite the extreme conditions, scientists see it as a place of untapped potential and future discoveries. This became a fitting metaphor for the firm’s positioning: Lake Whillans uncovers hidden opportunities even in the most challenging circumstances
The company’s website felt outdated and no longer accurately reflected its brand essence. The task was to craft a new experience — one that combined storytelling with clean design and allowed for striking photography.
The foundation of the new style came from Antarctic landscapes photographed by American photographer Christopher Michel. His work brought atmosphere and emotional depth to the site.
We built a flat, minimalist website with clearly defined layers of meaning. Text carries the content and decisions, while photography delivers mood and emotion. Vivid color images add energy and movement on the homepage, while black-and-white photography keeps the focus on the content on inner pages.
The redesign also included a transition to a typographic logo, carefully selected modern typefaces, a refreshed site structure, and a refined approach to storytelling — from concise texts to in-depth white papers. The result is a website that reflects the character of Lake Whillans: restrained yet modern, content-focused yet captivating — much like the mysterious lake itself.
